MUX ONE - REAL COMMUNITY RADIO
We are sooooo proud to be the UK's first permanent small-scale DAB multiplex. We launch our Tynemouth & South Shields mux on 10 December 2021 opening a new chapter in UK radio broadcasting.
MUX ONE is fortunate, we are led by two stalwarts of the broadcasting industry, one a current expert digital transmission engineer (ex-BBC and Arqiva) the other a former senior executive of major media networks.
SS-DAB brings huge choice to Tyneside and Wearside as we launch with stations for the elderly community, the LGBTQ+ community, football fan and Asian communities. We have stations that focus on mental health and another giving unsigned musicians much needed airplay.

We deliberately doubled the mandated number of spaces on the mux for community broadcasters so there are still plenty of stations to go-live over the next few weeks, radio stations covering their particular towns as well as a clutch of new great new music stations for the region. With a main transmitter nestled between the cities of Newcastle and Sunderland, MUX ONE will bring up to 30 new DAB radio stations the towns of, North Shields, South Shields, Whitley Bay, the Boldons, Jarrow, Wallsend as well as East Newcastle & Gateshead and North Sunderland.
In February 2021 OFCOM awarded the licence to build and operate the Tynemouth & South Shields small-scale DAB multiplex to Mux One. The DAB radio service will reach over 380,000 adults across 214sq kms from its Cleadon transmission site, bringing up to 30 new community focussed DAB radio stations the towns of, North Shields, South Shields, Whitley Bay, the Boldons, Jarrow as well as East Newcastle & Gateshead and North Sunderland.
Transmissions start 10 December 2021.
Mux One has already started work in preparation ahead of applying for Round 3 small-scale DAB licences in additional regions. We have specific focus on the following areas - and thanks to the stations already signing up in principle for these. We will confirm any applications we submit.
If you'd also like to register early interest in the regions below, just get in touch - we'd love to chat!
Middlesbrough & Redcar
Mux One has a true affinity with Teesside, it's our home turf after all. But this mux brings over 225,000 adults across an area of 610sqkm - why wouldn't we want to bring our SS-DAB learning, success, expertise and resources to our home area. Up The Boro!
Talk about learning, Durham is very much the home of North East learning with the illustrious university - but there's more to the city and surrounding area than just education. That's the exact reason we would like to bring real local radio choice to over 184,000 adults across an area of 378sqkm.
